Earning as a freelance developer in India

Graduates ask us how to earn independently. The honest version: you sell a clear outcome to people who already have budget, and you keep records. Marketplaces are a lead source, not a business.

Pick a niche you can prove

"Full-stack" is not a niche. Examples that we can stand behind from our stack:

• Next.js admin + Elysia API for an internal tool.
• Flutter app that talks to an existing API.
• A small RAG assistant over a company's PDFs. See build vs buy an AI chatbot.

Your six internship projects are proof only if they run. A GitHub repo that does not start locally is not a portfolio.

First clients

• People who already paid you or a teammate for something smaller.
• Local businesses that need a site or app, with a written scope.
• Not: unpaid "exposure" for a cousin's idea.

Write a one-page proposal: outcome, timeline, payment schedule, what is out of scope. Our proposal creator can draft the skeleton. You still put real numbers in.

Money and compliance

• Take a deposit before you write production code.
• Invoice in your name or your firm. If you cross the GST threshold, register and file. See the GSP explainer if you are building GST software, which is a different problem than your own GST.
• Keep a simple ledger. Future you will need it.

We are not your CA. We are telling you not to mix client money with chai money in one UPI app forever.

Rates

Charge for a slice (a landing plus CMS, an API plus one Flutter screen), not "hourly until the founder is happy." Hourly without a cap is how students burn out and clients never ship.

If the work is a full product, you may be looking at a studio engagement instead. That is services, not a weekend freelance gig.

Keep the craft

Freelancing dies when you cannot maintain what you sold. Use the same review habits as the program: small PRs, env files not in git, a staging URL.
